As the grocery chain faces scrutiny in New York for storing customers’ biometric data, Wegmans won’t say if any stores in Maryland are in the “small fraction” of locations where it has deployed cameras that use facial recognition technology.
As first reported by Gothamist.com, newly posted signs in the windows of Wegmans stores in Manhattan and Brooklyn state that biometric data collection is underway and may include facial recognition, eye scans and voice prints. The data is being used to “protect the safety and security of our patrons and employees,” the signs say.
